Commiserating on a Monday

Today I had the best walk with the dogs this year! It snowed last night and over the weekend. Most of the sidewalks remain unshoveled so I put my old clunky winter boots on and we trudged through about 5 inches of snow. The temperature was 25 degrees but there was NO wind! It was perfect for a fun romp in the snow. The dogs were in high spirits and they lifted mine. It’s been so bitterly cold lately (single digits) that we’ve had to skip a couple of days’ walks entirely and cut a few others short. Today we did our full 30 minutes and it was glorious. At least one part of my day went right.
Hubby had to work yesteday but went in early so he could get home in time to see the game. We went to a small SuperBowl party and even though the 49ers didn’t win (everyone there was rooting for them), it was a fun time. The 4 notable things about the game were: 1) the Ravens were so far ahead in the beginning 2) the lights went out in the SuperDome for 35 minutes 3) how close the game was at the end and 4) I didn’t drink. I’d gotten up early like hubby and cleaned the house, took a bath and various other things. Had lunch around 1 pm like usual and afterwards my stomach was bothering me. Like I’d eaten something that didn’t agree with me. I’d had a cucumber with my sandwich and figured maybe that was it. As the time came to leave for the party (5 pm), I felt worse and worse. Everyone else started eating the party food right away and I waited until half time. A lot of the stuff was gone by then so I got a small bowl of chili and a piece of dutch apple pie. My stomach just didn’t feel good enough to drink and Greg was too tired to drink. He was afraid if he drank he’d fall asleep. One of the host’s coworkers DID fall asleep during the game, so it happens. I told Mom we’d be home by 9 pm since that’s what it was 2 years ago when we last went to their party. No one could’ve predicted the delay due to the lighting problem so we got home a little before 10 pm. She was fine while we were gone. I laid out a plate, knife, loaf of bread and the creamy peanut butter jar so I knew she wouldn’t starve. Normally, if I drink at a party like that, I’d come home famished and have a hamburger or chips or something. I had NOTHING when I came home even though we stayed up until 11:30 pm. I wish I could do that all the time. When I woke up this morning, I was glad I didn’t drank.
I woke up to my period today. Funny how even though I knew it was due, it doesn’t always feel like cramps. Sometimes it’s nausea or stomach upset. I had anguished ALL week because I knew it was due today and it usually comes 2 days early. I didn’t want to be at the SB party and deal with this. Besides hating to have a period ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, I hate having it away from home. Lately my period is so heavy I need to be in the bathroom every 1-1 1/2 hrs to change things up. Even though I’m using the heaviest protection out there. It makes the first 2 days so UNFUN. Spending the day running back and forth to the bathroom and the rest of the time curled into a fetal ball with the cramps from hell. The cramps are so bad, I feel like my innards are being scraped with a giant, rusty spoon. That’s only the half of it. When at a party like last night, I worry about putting tampons down the toilet; afraid of plugging it up. I also don’t like wrapping them up in toilet paper and putting them in the trash. The little trash can always sits right next to the toilet and all the men look into it as they pee. I hate having everyone or anyone know I have a period. Why? I feel like I’m 12 again and it’s embarrassing. Stupid reason and I should outgrow it sometime before I go into menopause, don’t you think?!
It’s been 4 weeks ago today that I called People magazine about the postal destruction of my double issue. I was so pleased with how their customer service handled it. They said a replacement issue would show up in 10-14 days. I assumed they meant business days so was going to call them a week ago. Hubby said to give them another week. So today I called and went through the whole rigmarole of speaking to the computer first, saying and spelling my last name and then first name. It gets my last name on the first try, then has me do my first name 10 times and the computer can’t figure it out. Even when they have me just spell it, it doesn’t help. Then I finally get a human and I swear it’s the same person I had last time. I explained the situation and she looked it up. She said it had been mailed out on Jan. 24th and I would receive it in 10-14 days. So I should have it by Thurs. I asked how long I should wait if I don’t get it by then. She said to feel free to call back on Thurs. I asked her why they waited so long to mail it after I called. She didn’t know. If they would’ve just told me the first time I called that they were waiting 3 weeks to send it, it wouldn’t have been a big deal. They originally made it sound like they were sending it right out to me. I asked her if she would look it up in their records to see if it showed that I had called on Jan. 7th. She took about 5 minutes and came back and said their records showed I called on Jan.24th and they mailed it on the 24th! That kind of thing makes my blood boil. Here I had praised People magazine on Twitter and in my blog about how well they take care of their customers. I said I knew for a fact when I’d called and why since they “monitor and record” calls, why they didn’t know I had called on the 7th. She said she’d transfer me to an account service person if I would hold. I said I would. Immediately a recording comes on saying, “Due to a system problem, we are unable to take your call right now. Please call again at another time.” It’s almost funny if it wasn’t so maddening.
As for the other thing I’d been complaining about previously, one month of the year is gone and I still have no Betty Crocker calendar. 4 weeks ago the person tweeting for them told me to DM my address so they could make it right. I was HOPING for the calendar they promised me but would have settled for a box of goodies or at the very least some coupons. Instead they’ve forgotten me which is the way companies treat their customers in 2013. I DM’d them to ask them to admit they’ve forgotten me entirely so I can quit waiting. They DM’d back to say that their Customer Service people are helping with the calendars and to call them. Huh? I did that a month ago, they were rude and told me they had no calendars left. That’s why the person tweeting had asked for my address. If I didn’t have to finish this post, I’m sure my head would explode. This is how all Mondays are, isn’t it?!
To end this on a happy note, I want to share with you my latest find. It’s Salted Karamel vodka by Stoli. I found it by accident. My mom likes rum, hubby likes whiskey and I’m a vodka gal. We finished my Absolut vodka when having Bloody Marys over the weekend. I wanted to get more but the grocery store is so expensive. Hubby talked me into getting SKYY vodka which I’ve never had. I told him we could get that for Bloody Marys but I wanted something good for my stuff. I’m such a brat. I love the Pinnacle Cake vodka but it’s awfully sweet. Especially when mixed with Voltage. I’m not a Mountain Dew fan but the fact is I love drinking something that’s blue in color. I haven’t tried a lot of the other flavored vodkas like Whipped Cream but I know I’d like them. Then I spied the Stoli. I was sold immediately plus there was a coupon for $3 off hanging on the top. The back of the bottle had a recipe for a “Bad Romance” which calls for cherry soda. We didn’t know whether to get Cherry 7-up or Cherry Dr. Pepper so got both. Hubby and I both tried it with the Cherry 7-up. YUM! I think I found my new favorite drink. It is light and refreshing but delicious. I only had 3 so will have to try it out again tonight to make sure it wasn’t a fluke! ;-)
